Silver Griffin Wax Seal Necklace

Griffins are legendary creatures with the body of a lion and the head, wings, and talons of an eagle. Long believed to symbolize strength, courage, and vigilance, they are fitting guardians for anyone who wears them.

Each of these striking necklaces is individually handcrafted from an antique intaglio fob, making every piece a one-of-a-kind creation. The original fob, made of warm 9kt rosy gold, features a powerful fighting griffin intricately carved into warm orange glass.

To recreate this image, I use precious metal clay—pressing the impression into the clay by hand, then firing, oxidizing, and finishing it in pure .999 fine silver. The result is a richly textured, heirloom-quality pendant with a story to tell.

This lovely little charm measures slightly over 3/4” long and 3/4” wide and is strung on a sterling silver chain with a sterling silver clasp.

The item pictured is not the exact piece you will receive as I make these to order. Since they are special orders made especially for you, they will take roughly a week to ship.  

Process - The medium I use to create this pendant is known as Metal Clay and it consists of recycled silver from photo negatives mixed in an organic binder. In this case I used a wax stamp to make an impression on the clay, then I fire in a kiln where the binder burns away and the piece that remains is .999 pure silver.  I then oxidize (darken) it in order to bring out the texture, and polish the high points to create a nice contrast.
