In the late 1800s and early 1900s, pocket watches were the essential timepiece — wristwatches had yet to make their debut. Men would tuck their pocket watch into a vest or jacket pocket, secured by a chain. On the opposite end of that chain was a counterweight, or "fob," placed in another pocket to keep the watch in place and prevent it from falling or getting lost.
This particular fob is the counterweight ad is crafted from gold-filled (a thick layer of gold over base metal) and features four beautifully dyed blue chalcedony cabochons. It reminds me of a Victorian lantern.
We've given this antique piece new life by pairing it with a modern 18" 14k yellow gold twisted rope chain with a secure spring ring clasp — a perfect blend of old-world craftsmanship and contemporary style.
